The island of Bali is known for many things. Its beaches and waters make it among the most visited tourist destinations in the world. The 20,000 temples located in the island have also been noted in making it the holy temple capital of Southeast Asia. But one of the best things that separate Bali from most is its reputation as the Spice Islands.
The food in Bali is known for the many different spices used in them and there are literally hundreds of different recipes and dishes served in Bali. But what are the kinds of foods that you must try when in Bali? Here are a few examples of the dishes and delicacies you cannot pass when visiting the island of Bali:
- Babi Guling: One of the favorite dishes in the island is this roast suckling pig dish. The pig is stuffed with spices and it is usually served with rice. Babi Guling is usually served in festivals and ceremonies but there are some restaurants that serve the dish when they are given a few days notice.
- Bebek Betutu: This dish, which literally means darkened duck, is roast duck cooked several spices such as ginger, lemon grass, turmeric and other spices. This is among the most famous dishes in Bali and is usually served during special occasions. One variant of this dish is the Ayam Betutu, in which they use chicken instead of duck.
- Lawar: This Balinese delicacy is prepared by men who chop strips of turtle and cook it with mango, coconut along with various spices. To top off the dish, the meat is mixed with raw blood, creating the signature reddish color. This is rarely served or offered to tourist and tourists, in turn, rarely want to try it. For the more delicate eaters, pork is usually substituted for turtle and the blood is omitted.
- Sate Lilit: The Sate Lilit is perhaps the signature dish of the island. It is a traditional food made up of fish and shrimp skewered in a lemongrass twigs, dipped in several spices including coconut and chili, then cooked over coconut husks. These can be found in almost all the restaurants in the island.
Urutan: Urutan is a traditional Balinese sausage made up of pork or beef. It was originally prepared from wild boar. It can be fried, grilled or dried for later use. It is fermented and dried with peppers, turmeric and many other different spices. These sausages can usually be found where there is a spit or a roast.
