Top Temples in Bali

The island of Bali is among the most visited islands in the archipelago of Indonesia. It is located just between the island of Java and Lombok. It is mostly known for its pristine white beaches, but it is also known for its rich culture and tradition. One of most culturally affluent locations in the island is with its famed temples. There are over 20,000 temples in Bali but here are the top temples to visit while in Bali:
- Besakih Temple: the Besakih temple is located 1,000 meters up the slope of Mount Agung, and is considered to be the ‘Mother of all Temples’ in Bali. It is one of the biggest and holiest temples in Bali and it is considered among the most sacred locations by the locals. It was named after an ancient Dragon God that was believed to have inhabited the mountain.
- Gunung Kawi Temple: Gunung Kawi, when translated means ‘carving in the mount’. It is a 10th century Hindu Temple located inside the regency of Gianyar. To enter the temple, you will have to walk down a 300-step stone stairway. At the bottom, you will find ten memorials craved into the rock faces. Each of these memorials is at least 7 meters tall. According to legend, these are the memorials of an ancient king and his family.
- Pura Blanjong: Pura Blanjong is a temple built to commemorate the Buddhist king, Sri Kesari, and his journey to the east. Sri Kesari was a founder of several temples and structures in the area. Pura Blanjong is considered among the most sacred locations in the island and it is marveled for its architecture as well as its spiritual relevance.
- Pura Penataran Sasih: Pura Pentaran Sasih is a temple located six kilometers northwest of the Gianyar regency and two kilometers north of Pejeng. It is known as the ‘Moon Temple’ and got its name from an ancient bronze kettle drum called the ‘Moon of Pejeng’. The drum is kept in its inner chamber. It is known as the largest bronze kettle in Southeast Asia at about 2 meters in length. The kettle supposedly dates back to 300 BC.
- Taman Ayun Temple: The Taman Ayun Temple is located in Mengwi, a few kilometers northwest of Denpasar. The temple features unique pagodas that represent the sacred mountain Mahameru, which is believed to be the home of the Supreme God. On its holy festival, hundreds of women place offerings to this temple.
