Traditional Dances in Bali

The island of Bali is among the most visited islands around the world. Its main attractions include their famous white sand beaches and perfect waves. But aside from that, Bali is also a culturally rich island with historic locations and religious traditions. One of the best ways to experience the unique and beautiful culture of Bali is to witness one of their many traditional dances. Here are a few examples of the traditional dances you must see in Bali:

  • The Barong Dance: The Barong Dance, also known as the “Lion Dance”, is a ritual dance that depicts the fight between good and evil. The performers in this dance wear frightening lion masks and colorful costumes. This dance is often performed for tourists because it is colorful and vibrant and relatively easy to follow.
  • The Legong Keraton: One of the most well known and sought after dances in Bali is the Legong Keraton Dance. This particular dance can only be performed by pre-adolescent girls and depicts the movements of divine nymphs. Legong Keraton dancers are trained from the age of five and are highly regarded in the Balinese culture.
  • The Calonarang: This traditional dance is also a drama that tells the story of the Rangda, the witch-queen wife of Shiva. The dance and story has many variations and rarely are two Calonarangs the same. The dance is usually performed to celebrate the Temple of the Dead, to ward off evil spirits and black magic.
  • The Pendet: The Pendet dance is performed with offerings to purify a temple or a theatre before any performance or ceremony. The Pendet is usually performed by young girls carrying white flowers which are thrown in the air throughout the dance. The dance is also performed to welcome the audience or to invite spirits watch.
  • The Baris: The Baris is a traditional dance in which a dancer depicts the movements and feelings of a warrior prior to battle. It is also meant to glorify the triumph of a Balinese warrior in battle. It was originally performed as a religious ritual to dedicate Balinese warriors and their weapons to a temple. The dancer often bears a kris, a spear or a bow.

The Topeng: The Topeng or the “Mask Dance” is also a traditional dance wherein one or two dancers wear different masks to tell stories about ancient kings and mythical heroes. Topeng dancers include the Topeng Manis, a refined hero, the Topeng Kras, an authority figure, and Topeng Tua, an old man who draws the audience with jokes.
